Ferrets and children /
What you should be like to like living with ferrets

I sometimes get asked if it's suitable to buy ferrets for one's children. To that I can categorically state that it never is. In my mind there's no doubt that there're lots of older children who could take care of a ferret, but there's no way you can convince me that you can know beforehand that the 14 year old will be able to and want to take care of that ferret when he or she has become 22 and for all the days until then and perhaps some more.

That you have children is in itself not something which should stop you from getting a ferret, or for that matter the other way round. Like with all pets, you must of course be careful, both for the childrens' and the pets' sake.

What it takes is that all in the family must consider it natural to always and forever remember to never shut a door without checking that nobody is in the way or gets shut in a cupboard or something, never to step on a carpet which could hide a ferret, never sit in furniture without first checking that a ferret isn't hiding there, and so on! Some children don't fit in this category, but neither do all adults...
