Important rules for living with ferrets
- Never punish your ferrets!
- You may have to show them that you're larger
and stronger than they are during the first week or
so when they live with you.
- Rewards is the best way of
telling them what the rules are
- If you need to tell them they haven't
done what they should've, telling
them is the best way to do it.
- Never lie to your ferrets!
- They do understand very much of what
you say, and will get confused if you
aren't telling the truth always.
- You don't have to tell the literal
truth like to humans. You can simplify for
their sake, like letting "going to a show"
mean any visit to a place they haven't
been before, so they know they had better
go to the toilet before climbing into the
travel cage.
- Don't keep them in a cage if there's a
way to avoid it!
- They like to choose their own places
to live and sleep, and usually have
different favourite places depending on
the time of day and year.
- It's true that they sleep a lot during
a day, but it's when they're awake they
need to get around on their business.
- If the climate and circumstances permit,
do take them outdoors for a walk every day.
- Ferrets aren't hard to get to wear a
harness and walk on a lead.
- Since they're curious, they love to
get out and investigate things.
- While they may look small compared to
a dog, they do have endurance. If they
want to, walking and running a kilometer
and back isn't too much for them.
- Watch your ferrets carefully for any
medical problems.
- Spoil your ferrets!
But don't feed them lots of sweets and other
unsuitable food.
Ferrets: you can't live without them!
